Why GPA Matters Abroad
Conversion Methodology
Our calculator uses internationally recognized conversion formulas validated by academic institutions worldwide. Each formula is optimized for accuracy and consistency across different grading systems.
Understanding CGPA and GPA: Key Differences
CGPA (Cumulative Grade Point Average) is commonly used in India and several Asian countries, measured on a 10-point scale. GPA (Grade Point Average) is the grading system preferred in the US, Canada, and Europe, usually on a 4.0 scale, though some universities use 4.33, 5.0, or 7.0 scales.
In short: CGPA uses a 10-point scale, GPA uses a 4-point scale. This difference is why CGPA to GPA conversion is crucial for study abroad applications.
CGPA to GPA Conversion Examples
- Example 1: CGPA 8.5 → (8.5 / 10) × 4 = 3.4 GPA
- Example 2: CGPA 9.2 → (9.2 / 10) × 4.33 = 3.98 GPA
- Example 3: GPA 3.5 (4.0 scale) → (3.5 / 4) × 10 = 8.75 CGPA
Common GPA Scales Used Worldwide
- 4.0 Scale (USA): Most common - 4.0 = A grade.
- 4.33 Scale (Canada, Hong Kong): Includes A+ distinction.
- 5.0 Scale (Nigeria, Middle East): Higher range grading.
- 7.0 Scale (Australia): Distinction and pass mapped on 7 points.
Mistakes to Avoid in GPA Conversion
- Using the wrong GPA scale — not all universities use 4.0.
- Rounding too early — Always keep 2 decimal places.
- Mixing weighted and unweighted GPAs.
- Ignoring university-specific requirements — some require WES/ECE evaluation.

How do you convert CGPA to percentage?
To convert CGPA to a percentage, multiply your CGPA by a university-specific factor. This calculator uses (CGPA − 0.75) × 10; many Indian boards such as CBSE instead use CGPA × 9.5. For example, an 8.5 CGPA is about 77.5% with the first formula or 80.75% with the second — always use the formula your university or credential evaluator specifies.
How is CGPA calculated?
CGPA (Cumulative Grade Point Average) is the average of your grade points across all subjects or semesters. Each subject's grade point is weighted by its credit hours, summed, and divided by the total credits. Your figure for a single semester is the SGPA (Semester GPA); the CGPA is the cumulative average of your SGPAs across the whole programme.
CGPA vs GPA — what's the difference?
CGPA is usually reported on a 10-point scale (common in India), while GPA is the US 4.0 scale. Converting between them lets universities and credential evaluators like WES compare applicants from different grading systems on one common scale.
